Safety Instructions for Using the "PStill" Software
1. Purpose
The "PStill" software is a data format
converter capable of converting PostScript, EPS, and PDF files, as
well as certain image formats like TIFF, JPEG, PNG, and GIF, into PDF
files and certain image formats, including specialized PDF formats such as PDF/A or PDF/X. The
special version "PStill Pro" can also generate PostScript
and EPS formats.
2. Notes and Warnings:
Functionality- and
security-relevant updates are provided on the product's website (see
web address above). The user of PStill should periodically check for updates but
must download and install them independently. PStill does not
implement an update functionality.
The software is
intended exclusively for professional users with background knowledge
of the file formats being used and their specifications. It allows
configurations via its options, which might produce incomplete and/or application-specific unsuitable results. The user must
verify the software's results before and during any productive use.
The software creates new files during execution and may overwrite files
with the same name. Ensure that the respective target files are
allowed to be overwritten. Back up important files before running the
software.
The software is designed for processing
proprietary data from controlled sources. External data, which might
contain viruses or malware, must not be processed. The user must
ensure appropriate checks of input data before execution.
3. Cybersecurity warnings for use in a network
PStill only reads and writes plain files. The software itself has no networking abilities except for the graphical user interface version "GPStill"´:
Parts of the
software ("GPStill.exe") on Microsoft Windows operating
systems can, if activated by the user in the application options,
receive input data via the local network using the LPR printing
protocol and the (Windows) RAW printering protocol and automatically
convert the received data into an output folder.
However, both the supported LPR and RAW print protocols
does not inherently provide access control. If activated, any
system with access to the LPR and RAW port (TCP Port 515 and TCP Port
9100 respectively) can send data to the GPStill.exe
application for conversion. Therefore, when enabling this feature via network setup
or external firewall, the user must ensure unauthorized system may
not access the Software and thus no unauthorized data is processed.
The network functionality should not be activated if this cannot be
guaranteed.
4. Updates
Functional and security-related updates are made available on the product website (see above). The user of PStill should periodically check for updates, but must also download and install them themselves. The usage of versions that are either replaced by a updated version, end-of-life ('OLD') or provided only for historic reasons ('ANCIENT') is at the sole risk of the user. Sicherheitshinweise zur Benutzung der Software „PStill“
1. Verwendungszweck
Die Software „PStill“ ist ein Datenformatkonverter, welches PostScript, EPS und PDF-Dateien, sowie bestimmte Bildformate wie TIFF, JPEG, PNG und GIF in PDF-Dateien, bestimmte Bildformate, sowie PDF-Spezialformate wie PDF/A oder PDF/X konvertieren kann. Als Sonderversion „PStill Pro“ ist es auch in der Lage PostScript und EPS-Formate zu erzeugen.
2. Benutzungs- und Warnvermerke:
Funktions- und sicherheitsrelevante Updates werden auf der Webseite des Produkts (siehe Webadresse oben) zur Verfügung gestellt. Der Anwender von PStill sollte diese periodisch auf Updates prüfen, muss diese allerdings selbst herunterladen und installieren. PStill selbst hat keine integrierte Updatefunktion.
Die Software richtet sich ausschliesslich an erwachsene Profi-Benutzer mit Hintergrundwissen über die verwendeten Dateiformate und ihrer Vorgaben. Sie erlaubt über ihre Optionen auch Einstellungen/Vorgaben welche u.U. unvollständige und/oder für den jeweiligen Anwendungsfall des Benutzers unpassende Ergebnisse erzeugt. Der Benutzer hat die Ergebnisse der Software vor und während produktiver Verwendung zu überprüfen.
Die Software schreibt neue Dateien während der Ausführung und überschreibt auch ggfs. Dateien gleichen Namens. Sorgen Sie unbedingt dafür, dass die jeweiligen Zieldateien auf diese Weise überschrieben werden dürfen. Sichern sie ggfs. vor der Ausführung wichtige Dateien.
Die Software ist zur Verarbeitung von eigenen Daten aus kontrollierter Quelle bestimmt. Fremddaten, die ev. Viren oder Malware enthalten dürfen nicht verarbeitet werden. Der Benutzer hat vor der Ausführung für eine entsprechende Kontrolle der Eingangsdaten zu sorgen.
3. Sicherheitshinweise zur Cybersicherheit in Netzwerkumgebungen:
PStill selbst arbeitet nur auf Dateiebene. Die Software selbst hat keine Netzwerkfunktionen, bis auf die spezielle Version mit grafischer Benutzerschnittstelle „GPStill“:
Teile der Software (Programmname: „GPStill.exe“) unter den Betriebssystem „Windows“ der Fa. Microsoft sind in der Lage – sofern vom Anwender in den Anwendungsoptionen aktivert - über das lokale Netzwerk per Druckprotoll LPR sowie dem Druckprotokoll RAW Eingangsdaten zu empfangen und automatisch in einen Ausgangsordner zu konvertieren.
Die dabei unterstützten Druckprotokoll LPR und RAW erlauben jedoch prinzipell keine Zugangskontrolle. Wenn netzwerkweit aktiviert kann jedes System welches von aussen Zugriff auf den LPR-Port (TCP Port 515) oder RAW-Port (TCP Port 9100) hat, Daten an die Anwendung GPStill.exe zur Konvertierung senden. Daher ist bei einer Freigabe dieser Funktion per Netzwerkeinstellungen oder externer Firewall vom Anwender selbst sicherzustellen, dass keine unautorisierten Daten verarbeitet werden. Die Netzwerkfunktion darf nicht aktivert werden, wenn das nicht der Fall ist.
4. Updates
Funktions- und sicherheitsrelevante Updates werden auf der Webseite des Produkts (siehe oben) zur Verfügung gestellt. Der Anwender von PStill sollte diese periodisch auf Updates prüfen, muss diese aber auch selbst herunterladen und installieren. Die Nutzung von Versionen, die entweder durch eine aktualisierte Version ersetzt wurden, das Ende ihres Lebenszyklus erreicht haben („OLD“) oder nur noch aus historischen Gründen bereitgestellt werden („ANCIENT“), erfolgt ausschließlich auf Risiko des Benutzers.
